  7. Senator Mitchell (D-ME)  was elected to his current post as Senate Majority Leader in 1989. He has been in the Senate since 1980 when he was appointed to complete the unexpired term of Senator Muskie.

He has been a member of the Finance Committee since 1981; and from 1984 to 1986, Mr. Mitchell served as Chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.  The 100th Congress named him Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Senate.  During this time he served on the Senate Committee investigating the Iran-Contra Affair.
